Chapter 5

Erick had bought her a dress for dinner, Tiffany found.

It was on her bed in a long, pretty pink box. Inside the box, wrapped in delicate tissue paper, was a slick teal empire waist dress, and it came with a long, soft cardigan in black. She wondered if it was cashmere and checked the tag. It was. It was also a brand she didn’t know, so she was very careful of it.

“I’m sure it’s too expensive,” she said to no one, since she was in her room alone. “But I do want to look the part for the dowager.” She took a shower and donned the dress, then immediately regretted it, because she had to worry about sweating through it before it was even time to leave her room. She hoped the cardigan would cover any issues that might crop up. It didn’t help that there was a string of pearls waiting on her vanity as well.

God, please, she thought. Just don’t let me fall.

Erick came to her room to walk her to dinner. He knocked on her door. Tiffany didn’t know why it seemed so...

adorable.

When she opened the door, he opened his mouth, and then it stayed that way.

“You don’t like it?” Tiffany gasped, stepping back away from the door. She was horrified. “It doesn’t fit right.”

She knew it.

“No, you’re wrong,” he snapped. “I love it. It fits perfectly. I thought I might pick the wrong thing, or maybe that Mrs. Wynn would be a bit off about the size, but... it’s perfect. You’re perfect.”

Tiffany couldn’t agree with the last statement... well, she couldn’t understand what had inspired him to make any of the aforementioned statements, but she definitely felt outrageously flattered by what he thought.

“Thank you, Erick,” she said.

“Thank you for being so accommodating,” he said, but the look on his face was a lot warmer than what he said, and a lot less formal.

“Thank you for the beautiful dress,” she said, giving the tiniest curtsy. It seemed the tiny movement inflamed him.

“We better get going,” he said. “I don’t want to make us late.”

“Why would we be late?” she asked.

“I’ll have to talk some more with you about that... later,” he said carefully. But she could see the heat in his eyes, and it warmed her. He held out his arm. “Mrs. James.”

She took his arm. “Mr. James.” He radiated warmth, which was always so disconcerting, because he, in general, was so chilly. He kept her warm on their walk to his mother’s wing.

The dowager’s dining space was lit mostly by candle, which was surprising and delightful, but also a little spooky, since Tiffany hadn’t seen any other area in the house like it. It seemed the oldest pieces of furniture had found their way to the dowager’s suite of rooms. If someone had made luxurious homes during Prohibition an art installation, it would have looked like her sitting room, which had been transformed for dinner with her son... and his new, actually blushing bride.

Tiffany was getting darned tired of blushing.
